Our Journey

Hello Everyone…We’ve made it to Bellingham after 3 days of driving and 2 nights of camping! Our first day of driving found us camping in a town called New Salem, ND. A fun fact about North Dakota and most towns in Montana: They love spelling out the name of the town in white rock against the side of the biggest hill in town.

New Salem is the home of Bessie Blue, a gigantic cow statue gazing out at I-90 from atop a hill in town. We camped beneath Bessie in a quaint park called North Park. We were the only campers in the park. For future reference, the mosquitos in New Salem are blood-thirsty. T ended up with 40-50 bites all over her body. No joke. Another good thing to keep in mind regarding North Dakota: Purchase gas whenever you can. Gas Stations in ND are few and far between, and if you do happen to find one in Dawson, ND, it’ll probably be closed by 3 in the afternoon.

Everyone says that Montana is a boring drive. Where this particular sentiment formed, I have no idea. Montana is beautiful. Sure, the first half of Montana is filled with distant bluffs and long-stretching ranges for cattle production, but the topography looks nothing like the midwest. Furthermore, after the stretch between Billings and Butte, the elevation changes drastically and the mountains emerge out of absolutely nowhere. The drive was never boring from that point on. I would’ve stayed in Missoula for a few days has had we not been in such a hurry to hit the coast.

Northern Idaho is the most mysterious place I’ve ever seen. The hills are literally covered in trees. There’s never a point in Northern Idaho where we weren’t descending. Tiny towns and roadside streams litter the landscape. I would’ve also spent a few days exploring this area of the country.

We spent our second night in Spokane, WA. It’s a pretty cool town actually. We’d been driving for 12 hours when we finally made it to the campsite (by the way…Riverside State Park is awful for camping. The sites have no foliage surrounding them and are seperated by only a few feet), so we sacked out fairly early. The river that runs through the park is captivating, however. I’ll add some pictures here when I get my own computer back from the shipping acency.

We’ve been camping in Larrabee State Park outside Bellingham for the last two nights. Larrabee is great. The sites have plenty of foliage and are seperate from one another. The park is located on Chuckanut Drive, which is easily one of the best 30-min drives in the country.

I’m going to finish our journey here, because we’ve rented a house and it’s a story in itself.

I want to quick say that I miss all of you a hell of a lot. And thanks to any and everyone who pretty much sponsored our drive out here. You all know who you are. Also…Zacher…the Leatherman has been a lifesaver. Lis…the rug is going to be perfect in our house.

Up next…the boathouse!
