Bellingham Slam

If you don't know that Mike loves watching basketball, you don't know Mike. He's not a fan, really, as he doesn't have a certain team he follows or cheers for. He doesn't obsess about player stats or know the names of all of the coachess of all of the teams in the NBA. He just truly enjoys watching the sport and does so without any unexplainable loyalties to any certain teams. Me? I always cheer for the underdog. I mean, Spoon will tell you - "You got no fear of the underdog; that's why you will not survive."

In our recent experience at a Bellingham Slam home game, British Columbia was the underdog. I should back up though. Who the hell is the Bellingham Slam, you ask? Well...

The Slam is our very own team in the IBL. You know-- the International Basketball League. It's a semi-pro league. I don't really know much about the structure of the league, and I may even be incorrect in calling it semi-pro. I haven't honestly done my homework on this. We do have their game schedule on our fridge, though, which means I can tell you for a fact that The Slam plays teams that span from British Columbia to Oregon. They play one game against China, too. I guess it's those games against our neighbors across the border in Canada that keep it "international" and the one game overseas against China that really drives their point home, eh? I shouldn't joke, though. We had a lot of fun at our first slam game, which was not too long ago.

Despite my somewhat embarrassing (for Mike) cheering for the British Columbia Titans (I think they were called Titans), Bellingham Slam smoked 'em. Maybe the fancy Slam Girls distracted the Titans. Yes, there were "Slam Girls." I think I put it best when I told Mike, "There must not be many dancers in Bellingham." Need I say more on that?

Half-Time was pretty awesome, though - better than the Slam Girls. Everyone folded a paper airplane, and we then all launched our paper airplanes at a banner that had been placed on center court. Whomever was able to land their plane nearest the sun on the banner won a round-trip airline ticket. Unfortunately, we didn't win, but we have reason to practice our plane folding and flying skills now.

So, okay. We couldn't afford to see The Celtics play The Lakers. Maybe someday. For now, watching The Slam will have to do.
